Welcome to the Lace Society

Welcome to our website

This site is still being developed and will be added to over the coming months. The logon on the right hand side is for future use and is not currently in operation

About us

The Lace Society exists for the purpose of furthering interest in lace and lace making and accepts as members anyone interested in the making, collecting and teaching of lace, and lace artefacts of any type. The Lace Society offers three main services to members:

  • A quarterly newsletter is published.
  • We have a library from which members may borrow for a month.
  • Thirdly there is the Annual Rally which incorporates a suppliers fair.

In the past there has been a waiting list for membership. Today there is no restriction and we welcome anybody who has an interest in lace and would like to join us.

History

In 1968 a small group of women living in North Wales came together to form a class in lacemaking and from that class the original society was developed. It was then called the Lace Society of Wales and for some eight years the numbers did not grow significantly.

In 1974 it became The Lace Society, and when in 1976 several members, whose sphere of influence in lacemaking circles spread over the entire UK were persuaded to take office or become committee members, the newly named society “took off”

Marjory Carter

One of those people was Marjory Carter, a renowned teacher and lacemaker, who over the next 30 years generously gave much of her time and knowledge to the Society, to promote and preserve the craft she had first learnt as a 6 year old. Marjory died in January 2006 aged 90, but the Lace Society continues.

The society is still run today by a committee comprised entirely of volunteers who wish to see the craft of lace continue.
